  • Position Summary
    • As a member of the Dietary Services Department, the Registered Dietitian (RD) provides medical nutrition therapy in a clinical setting. The RD is a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and assists in the nutritional care of the patient through mechanisms of menu processing and patient assessment, following established procedures. Assists with interviewing, securing diet histories and evaluating patient nutritional status. Gives diet instruction and records patient information in the medical record. Utilizes knowledge of disease etiology, food/drug nutrient interaction, food chemistry, and anatomy and physiology in nutritional assessments.
  • Qualifications
    • Bachelor's of Science degree from an accredited program in nutritional sciences.
    • Maintains current NH licensure and registration with American Dietetic Association (ADA).
    • Minimum of two (2) years experience in a clinical nutrition setting.
    • Certification by the National Board for Diabetes Educators preferred.
    • Computer literate (i.e. electronic medical record, e-mail, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point).
    • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
    • English speaking and writing skills required / preferred.
  • Essential Functions of the Job
    • Required skills and competencies. Has competency checklist been completed with all competencies met (i.e. job skills / knowledge, equipment knowledge)?
    • Obtains patient census sheet with patient diet orders and obtains information on patient medications and medical history for inpatients and outpatients.
    • Follows protocols of service and develops patient care plans and discharge care plans.
    • Completes nutritional assessments and writes follow-up notes in the patient medical record. Consults with healthcare team concerning nutritional care of patients.
    • Ensures proper nourishments are provided to all patients at nutritional risk.
    • Attends patient care conferences and other meetings where the nutritional care of the patient is relevant.
    • On a continuous basis, monitors and evaluates the quality of nutritional services consistent with Hospital standards.
    • Provides nutrition education, including modified diet instruction, to inpatients, family, and care givers. Provides ongoing nutrition education for cardiac rehabilitation program.
    • May provide nutritional information for public relations and/or for Hospital staff and the community.
    • Modifies the cyclical house menu, special holiday menus, and appropriate modified diets or related standardized recipes.
    • Ensures test trays are prepared on a weekly basis. Monitors tray assembly on tray line at mealtimes to assure compliance to diet order.
    • Attends continuing education programs to maintain knowledge of current practices relative to the unique characteristics of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient populations served. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development relative to the age categories of the patients served.
    • Promotes and maintains an environment which is in compliance with federal, state and local regulations, accrediting agencies, and as delineated in the Hospital Corporate Compliance and Continuous Quality Improvement Programs.
    • Meets with Dietary Services Manager concerning department standards, policies, and procedures and other matters relating to diet, menus, nutrition, and patient nutritional care.
    • Submits monthly written statistical report to the Dietary Services Manager.
    • Maintains up to date and accurate information in Kardex regarding patients' diets, nourishments and consultation needs for department records.
    • Keeps a complete and accurate list of 'add on? food items for each meal, and accurately tallies tray line items.
    • Provides coverage of department phones and computer terminal to ensure timely response to requests for patient trays, special needs, patient floor stock, and other requests.
    • The following duties may be required:
      • Help with functions;
      • preparation of food;
      • performing other dietary related tasks in the absence of staff.
    • Records all functions in log book and on clipboard.
    • Manages time effectively to ensure that deadlines are met and that personal priorities support organizational objectives.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.
